The Ondo State Government has provided science equipment worth N580m to 137 public secondary schools in the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Jide Adejuyigbe, said in Akure on Wednesday that the equipment distributed between 2012 and 2014 were to improve practical teaching of science subjects in the schools.

He said, “As of 2010, all the existing old public secondary schools in the state had benefited from the distribution of science equipment and Mathematics training kits.

“But as a result of the changes in the curriculum which took off in 2011 coupled with the importance this administration places on science education, the state government commenced in 2012 the distribution of another set of science equipment and mathematics training kits where 137 public secondary schools have so far benefited at a cost of N580m.”

On the need for pupils to acquire practical skills in the sciences, Adejuyigbe said, “There is no gainsaying that this would go a long way to assist our pupils in acquiring the needed practical skills that will enable them to improve on their performances tremendously in the WASSCE and NECO SSCE Examinations.”

According to him, the invaluable contribution of science, technology and mathematics to the development of society globally has necessitated the huge investment of the present administration in the education sector.

The commissioner added that Mathematics, Science and Technology hold the key to socio-economic development of any nation.
